IP Traceroute Tool: Checks the route of packets pass through the different specified host from the source to destination server.

What is Traceroute

Traceroute is a network diagnostic tool in the computer networks for displaying the route from source to destination in the IP network and measures transit delays of packets across the path of IP network.

The “traceroute” command is used in all unix based OS like Linux, Centos, Ubuntu macOS ect. In windows bases operating system “tracert” command is used for traceroute of IP. For IPv6 the traceroute commands are traceroute6 or tracert6.

Traceroute helps us to analyze the path take by the packets from source to destination on IP network with the information of delays occurs on the path of packets.

How to run traceroute in Windows.

  1. Click Start menu.
  2. Click Run.
  3. To open the command line interface, type cmd and click OK.
  4. In the command line prompt for IPv4 type “tracert” with IP or website name:
  5. > tracert example.com
    For IPv4 type “tracert -6” with IP or website name:
    > tracert -6 example.com
  6. Click Enter.

Run traceroute on Linux

  1. Open a terminal window.
  2. In the terminal for IPv4 type “traceroute” with IP or website name:
  3. > traceroute example.com
    For IPv4 type “tracert -6” with IP or website name:
    > traceroute -6 example.com
  4. Click Enter.

Traceroute is a network tool used to track the path of a packet on an IP network from source to destination. Traceroute shows the time taken by each hop of the packet which pass through its route to the destination. Traceroute uses “Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)” protocol to uses the IP protocol's time to live (TTL) field values . Some times traceroute is also known as a tracert.
